Kiehls Amino Acid Shampoo Review

Suave Professionals, Tresemme, Pantene Pro-V, Dove Nutritive Solutions, and Garnier Fructis Sleek & Shine. These are only some of the leading shampoo brands in the US, based on a 2021 report by database company Statista.

But it doesn’t mean they’re the only brands that can give your hair the hearty cleansing it needs. While all shampoos are created to clean the hair and scalp, not all of them are created equal.

After all, different ingredients mean different levels of hydration too. And not all brands are right for every hair type. That’s until I came across Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo. One that’s promised to be the shampoo with Pure Coconut Oil and is labeled “for All Hair Types.”

Is it really suitable for all scalp and hair types? What are the ingredients that make it safe?

If you want to know more about Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo, keep on reading. By the end of this in-depth review, you will know the hair care product’s key ingredients, what other people are saying about it, or whether I would personally recommend this product for you.

TLDR: Review of the Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo

Amino Acid Shampoo – Shampoo with Coconut Oil – Kiehl's

Product Description

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo is promoted to be a coconut-oil enriched shampoo, which I personally appreciate since coconut is known for its moisturizing effect. It also has anti-inflammatory effects that may help those with scalp conditions, like dandruff.

It is also a mild shampoo that softens and cleanses hair while helping to add volume. Another highlighted ingredient in this shampoo is the Amino Acids aka proteins, known to boost hair growth.

Combining Amino Acids with coconut in a rich gel formulation shampoo results in a formula that adds fullness to your hair. It’s also worth mentioning that this hair care product is free of parabens and phthalates.

The phthalates have been used in some shampoos as gelling agents and are also found in conditioners, hairsprays, and mousses. While these groups of chemicals help soften hair, enhance absorption, and make fragrances last longer, they can cause side effects, like interfering with the natural functioning of the hormone system and worsening of allergy symptoms, among others as shown in animal studies.

That is why I would always recommend that when it comes to buying hair care products, stick to brands that pledged to remain phthalate-free, like Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo.

In-Depth Review of the Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo

Main Ingredients

Amino Acids

Amino acids construct proteins and are fundamental to the human body. When these amino acids are chemically united with a fatty acid or fatty alcohol, they work as cleansing properties while they maintain their mild amphoteric (reacting both as base and acid) character.

Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo is also infused with Hydrolyzed Wheat Starch and Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein to add body and fullness to the hair and leave it feeling shiny, smooth, and soft after wash.

The collective name of Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein is  Phyto Peptides, which is a good alternative for hydrolyzed animal protein derived by enzyme, acid, or another method of hydrolysis to offer film-forming, moisturizing, and conditioning properties.

Coconut Oil

Is a highly saturated, semi-solid, off-white fat expressed from the coconut kernels? When exposed to air, the coconut oil is stable and the way it is formulated, it lathers fast and readily.

Overall, with these ingredients, Kiehl’s is a good shampoo.

Who is it Best for?

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo is best for men and women who do not want to dry their hair out while cleaning it or those who are not fond of applying conditioner after shampoo. This is because the product leaves the hair silky soft. It also helps those with tangles.

What Do People Say About it?

Amazon

One Amazon customer wrote that this shampoo is a “great cleaner and smells terrific. [It] makes hair very shiny!”

Another review, “I have [a] very sensitive scalp and can’t use anything. I found this shampoo at a fancy gym I went to and tried it and I used it every sense……just love it. The coconut is very smoothing.”

YouTube

Dr. Rola Rabah, an Oral & Maxillofacial resident, shared her hair routine in a Youtube video and mentioned Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo.

She said, “I’m a big believer in giving your hair a break and doing shampoo and conditioner in between so maybe, like every two weeks I use different shampoo and conditioner. And so for that, I like Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo and conditioner.

This is a great shampoo and conditioner to use in place of the Living Proof.”

YouTube channel Girl’s Secret also reviewed Kiehl’s. She said, “My scalp is really sensitive. It’s really tricky with me when it comes to choosing a shampoo… [Kiehl’s ] has a coconut smell that is not strong. I have really positive reviews [of this shampoo.]

Surprisingly, it makes my hair super soft. With normal shampoo, I feel [my hair] is a little bit dry. With this one [Kiehl’s ], when my hair is wet, it’s already pretty soft and the scent… is really not that strong, [which] is really nice in my opinion. My scalp doesn’t feel dry or irritated at all.” she added.

Reddit

However, one Reddit user seemed to be having a dry scalp problem and have tried different dandruff shampoos, “but with little to no result.

I have a 3mm buzz cut and as soon as my hair reaches 8-10mm the dryness gets bad.

I shower daily as I hit the gym, but only wash my hair every 3 days (currently with Kiehl’s amino acid shampoo). I shower hot and then rinse with cold water after applying [the] product.” she said.

The Verdict: Should I Buy It?

Yes, this hair care product is highly recommended for all hair types. If you have dry hair, this nutritive shampoo gives your strands that nourishing agents so you can achieve that soft and shiny hair look.

In a large bottle of 250 ml or 8.4 fl, it’s worth the value of your money and is comparable to high-quality shampoos, like other L’oreal brands.

Kiehl’s Amino Acid Shampoo is mild that helps soften and add shine. And the best part is its smell! I just like that as you lather, it gives you that delightful shampoo experience.

Overall, I love Kiel’s products, especially this amino acid shampoo.
