EASY SUMMER HAIRSTYLE – MODIFIED ROPE BRAID UPDO

Hello lovely! Summer for me is all about finding quick and easy summer hairstyles, and spending as much time as I can enjoying myself, rather than in front of the mirror 😉 It’s also important that it looks cute and my absolute faves are the ones that look much harder than they really are 🙂

Easy summer hairstyle with a twist

I’ve used the rope braid technique a lot lately! If you haven’t checked out my previous summer hairstyle tutorials where I’ve implemented rope braids, you might be interested in my heatproof summer hairstyles or the 3 half up half down summer hairstyles. Today I want to show you how to easily modify a rope braid to achieve an even more detailed and intricate look.

The modified rope braid updo

This is a great easy summer hairstyle choice, that doesn’t require any hair prepping or heat styling! Additionally it will also survive the heat and stay put all day.

Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Pick up some hair close to you parting and divide it into two strands.
  2. Twist the lower strand (the one closest to your hairline) in the direction towards your face and cross it over the other strand in the direction away from your face. repeat again with what is now the lower strand (twist to the front, cross over to the back).
  3. Pick up additional hair from the front (hairline) and incorporate to the lower strand. The two sections will merge and form one strand that you will now twist to the front, then cross over to the back.
  4. Here comes the twist – you will only add in hair from the hairline every other time. So this time, don’t add in new hair, just twist to the front, cross over to the back. This way you’ll only keep adding in hair to one of the strands while the other remains thin. That will give it that interesting effect.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until you reach the top of your ear, then stop adding in new hair and just twist the strand around each other  a bit further down. Secure with an elastic and repeat on the other side. Pull a little bit on the one strand that is thicker, to accentuate the difference between them even more.
  6. This is optional, but you can now tease the hair in your crown gently and smooth it out. Now tie both twist in the back of your head. This will form a sort of headband in the back of your head.
  7. Separate the rest of your hair into five sections or more (depending on hair thickness). Twist each section and tuck the ends over the “headband” hiding them and securing in place with bobby pins.

TIP:

How you twist and tuck the hair over the so called headband will depend on your hair length, so have fun and play around with it a bit. It can be as neat or as messy as you like. I like to twist the section, then grab on to a thin strand of hair at the ends and pull the rest of the hair towards the roots. That will give this section some more “poof” and I’m able to hide the ends easily afterwards.

What is your favourite easy summer hairstyle?

I hope you give this one a go! As always, have fun with it and have a great hair day! 🙂
