7 WAYS TO SAVE YOUR HAIR FROM DAMAGE AND LOOK STYLISH THIS SUMMER!
July is finally here and most of us are planning our vacations! It’s a beautiful time of year, but it is also a time when our hair is exposed to a couple of damage factors, like sun or sea salt water.
The good news is we can protect our hair and just enjoy ourselves!
At the beginning I’d like stress that I’m NOT a professional hairdresser, so everything that I share with you is based on more than 15 years of dying my hair blonde and keeping it in very good condition most of that time (even when it was long) 😉 I have made mistakes too, but that’s why I’ve learned 😀
I have also had the pleasure of having a very good hairdresser taking care of my hair. She has become a friend and has taught me a lot over the years.
When I think of hair care during summer, three keywords come to my mind – products, accessories, hairstyles.
And number one rule – TREAT YOUR HAIR WELL AND IT WILL TREAT YOU WELL 🙂
But let’s take it one step at a time.
#1. TAKE A BREAK FROM HEAT STYLING! Our hair already has enough to handle with more exposure to the sun! If you really feel you need to style it a bit, let it dry naturally first and only at the end style it using a heat protecting product
#2. INVEST IN PROFESSIONAL PRODUCTS! And here is why… a lot of store bought products contain silicone, which is a cheap option to use for many companies in both their shampoos and conditioners. It seals of your hair and coats it, leaving it smooth and frizz free FOR A WHILE…. The downside is that it builds up in your hair, weighing it down and making it flat and dull over time, but worst of all – it prevents the conditioners and deep treatments you use to actually penetrate your hair! You can’t wash it out because it doesn’t dissolve in water. Silicone doesn’t help patch the hair up and strengthen it from inside, it just coats it. You can get rid of it using clarifying products. SO GET RID OF SILICONE PRODUCTS AND AT LEAST INVEST IN A GOOD HAIR MASQUE TREATMENT!
#3. FOR ALL YOU DYED BLONDIES OUT THERE – always use products for damaged hair, even if your hair is in good condition. It will help you keeping it that way 😉
#4. USE STYLING PRODUCTS WITH SPF 10 – 15 – UV protection during those sunny days is key!
#5. TRIM YOUR HAIR REGULARLY! Especially if you are growing it! I have seen many people trying to grow their hair faster by not cutting it at all, only to have it break off and appear the same length all the time… When I’m growing my hair out, I trim it at least every 8 weeks, only the ends. That can be as little as 5 mm. I promise you won’t even notice a difference in length, just in the quality of you hair 😉 If you plan a vacation and know you’ll subject your hair to a lot of sun and especially sea salt water, wait to trim it AFTER your vacation. You can do it before too, but chances are they will need a trim afterwards as well. Another good tip is ALWAYS RINSING YOUR HAIR IN NORMAL WATER AFTER YOU GET OUT OF THE SEA 😉 Most beaches have showers.
#6. ACCESSORIES ARE YOUR FRIENDS! My personal favourites are hats! 🙂 There are so many out there that are cheap and in different styles. You can not only look very fashionable, but protect your hair from the sun at the same time! 😉 Have fun experimenting.
#7. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST HAIR UPDOS!!! My favourite secret weapon! 🙂 Putting your hair up has several advantages! The most obvious is that your hair is out of the way and not sweaty and glued to your neck, face or back! Number two – you don’t have to heat style it, as it will be pulled back anyway. Number three – it prevents it from getting tangled by the wind, especially at the beach, where it tends to get pretty windy. Detangling your hair that has already been mistreated by sea salt can not only be challenging but also damaging to your hair.
